Corporate Understanding of the Significance of Headache: A Survey of Managers of Japanese Pharmaceutical and Health-related Companies

Abstract
Bacground: Approximately 30 million people in Japan experience chronic headache. However, there is no increasing trend in the number of individuals seeking medical advice for primary headache. We postulate that most managers tend to prevent employees from seeking such advice. The objective here was to evaluate the corporate understanding of chronic headache among managers of Japanese companies.

Methods: From July 2008 to March 2009, we surveyed managers of 16 Japanese pharmaceutical and health-related companies to determine their understanding of headache and compare differences between those who deal with triptans (T group) and those who do not (NT group).

Results: Valid responses from 1,396 managers revealed an overall understanding of migraine of 97.2% (96.1% in the T group). A total of 52.1% had an understanding of cluster headache; 16.2% in the NT group and 73.3% in the T group. Compared with the NT group, the T group had significantly good knowledge of the characteristics or symptoms of migraine. Recognition of triptans as well as preventive drugs was significantly lower in the NT group (triptans 47.6%, preventive drugs 21.7%) compared with the T group (89.2% vs. 68.9%). However, unexpectedly, it was indicated that most managers would advise employees to consult a doctor if time off due to headache was necessary.

Conclusions: Despite some differences, especially in managers dealing with triptans, the findings show an overall good understanding of chronic headache in Japanese companies. However, more community-based campaigns are needed to encourage employees to talk with their managers about headache and medical consultations.
